About Me
Roofing Encyclopaedia: Tips For Repair, Maintenance And Replacement

Hello there! I'm glad you dropped by. As the manager of a body corporate agency, I deal with a range of problems every day. Unwanted pests and burst drains are everyday occurrences. Sometimes, there are more unusual situations. Once, I had to deal with a tenant who was keeping a horse in his fourth-story unit! The most common problems I face are related to roofs as poorly-maintained roofs can cause leaks, fires and flying debris. Since I am always encouraging body corporates to maintain, repair or replace roofs before major hassles occur, I have become a bit of a roofing encyclopaedia. I can speak with reasonable knowledge about the best materials, techniques and tradespeople in the industry. I thought others out there might be seeking information about roofing repairs and benefit from my know-how. I hope these entries prove helpful. May you always stay dry!

Installing a new roof is not something that most homeowners will have to grapple with. However, in the event that you are constructing a new home or live in an old residence with a decrepit roof, then new roofing is unavoidable. There are a myriad of roofing options to choose from in the market. One of the more popular options that has withstood the test of time is metal roofing. Here are some of the various benefits of choosing metal roofing for your home.

Metal roofing comes in an array of options.

One of the reasons that metal roofing is popular is the fact that buyers have a number of materials to choose from. These materials include:

  • Tin metal roofing: This form of metal roofing is also referred to as terneplate. This material is softer than most other metal roofing alternatives. Typically, it will be coated with a layer of lead to make it sturdier.
  • Galvanised steel roofing: This material is composed of alloyed steel finished off with a protective layer of zinc. Although it is one of the more affordable options when it comes to metal roofing, it is also highly rust resistant.
  • Aluminium metal roofing: This type of roofing requires minimal maintenance as it is resistant to corrosion. Additionally, it reflects heat better than its galvanized steel counterpart, thus making it a good option for homes located in warmer climates.
  • Copper metal roofing: This is one of the more expensive alternatives when choosing metal roofing materials. However, it is the most durable, thus making it a worthwhile investment for your home.

Metal roofing is resistant to fire.

Another advantage of metal roofing is that it is non-combustible. As such, roofs made from this material tend to be given a class A fire rating as they are the most resistant when compared to other roofing alternatives. It should be noted though that the classification of your roofing might be lower depending on the materials that lie beneath the metal shingles.  For instance, you may have a metal roof, but if it lies atop wood, then the fire resistance classification rating may drop to a C.

Metal roofing has longevity.

If you opt to install metal roofing, you can be assured that you will not need roof replacement for at least a period of 40 to 70 years. The longevity of metal roofing can be attributed to the fact that it is resistant to a range of things including pest infestations, mould, mildew, decay, fire and more. If well maintained, your roofing should last you for a significant amount of time.
